In the XVth century the last Empire of humanity fell - Byzantium, the Empire of the great art, having determined a lot of development’s features for various countries of Medieval Europe.
After the Byzantium Empire having fallen, one of the greatest arts of humanity disappeared as well. There was a technique of decorations creating made of cloisonne enamel.
For artistic expression - the cloisonné enamel is one of the most significant techniques. The glossy surface of the image composed of colored fatnesses, and each contour is an accurate line made of fine silver or gold. And, only in this part of enamel framing with metal all its power is included. “…Having built on precious basis, decorated with seven velvet colors of rainbow, which are increased due to light and fire, sparkling and shining with that gloss which high-lights the depth. In the enamel, like precious stones there have been combinations of diamonds crystalline shine with ruby fire, smaragd frostwork and opal sunny clouds…2
It is hard to realize that something of this kind might have disappeared. However, after the Byzantium Empire having fallen, the cloisonné enamel became dead and, since XVIth it has been forgotten.3
Nowadays, very few jewelers in the world work in this area, creating single exclusive adornments, because some secrets have been lost and, work at enamel requires patience and it is technologically complicated.
A special feature of enamel this is its eternity. Up these days there have been saved few items of ancient enamel masters which have not lost their primordial shine and splendor for more than 1000 years.
The great artist Leonardo da Vinci, comparing enamel painting with sculpture said: “The advantage of sculptures is stability through the time; however, painting can be stable as well. It is made of enamel paints and after that is put into the fire with the following burning; it will be able to exceed even a sculpture in eternity. If a bronze sculpture is long-lived, the enamel painting is eternal. While the bronze sculpture becomes black and brown, the enamel painting saves colors’ brightness and softness, and it is extremely various”.
